Crowne Vault Releases 2026 Cemetery Industry Outlook: Insights Shaping the Future

Crowne Vault has released its 2026 Cemetery Industry Outlook, a national survey of 168 cemetery executives and professionals examining how rising cremation rates, changing family behavior, operational pressure, and technology gaps are reshaping the cemetery profession. The findings point to a central shift: cremation volume is growing, but cemetery placement is not automatically following. While many cemeteries report stable interment volume, fewer than half of cremated remains are ultimately placed in a cemetery, and 63% of cemeteries report conducting no outreach to cremation families.

The survey also highlights broader pressures facing cemeteries, including rising costs, staffing constraints, changing consumer preferences, and uneven technology adoption. Only 6% of respondents describe their cemetery as fully digital, while many are preparing for growth through expanded cremation gardens, niches, scattering areas, and new memorialization offerings.

The key takeaway is clear: the opportunity is not simply finding new families. It is re-engaging the families cemeteries already serve by staying connected after cremation, simplifying placement decisions, and communicating the lasting value of permanent care and remembrance.
